Upper Red Lake's 3rd Annual Crappie Fishing Contest

Despite the cold and 20-below wind chill, nearly 3,000 anglers fished the Upper Red Lake Crappie Contest, March 2, 2002

Sponsored by the:
North Beltrami Sportsmen's Club

Many Thanks!

When the Walleye fishing Collapsed on the Red Lakes a few years ago, so did the area economy. With an attractive area for tourism, the Upper Red Lake Area Association was concerned about the economic future of the area. The URLAA has a strong membership of local and area businesses and individuals who truly care and support the renewal of sport fishing on the Upper Red Lake.

The North Beltrami Sportsmen's Club is equally supportive and is a determined part of stimulating the fishing activity on Upper Red Lake. They have successfully organized and sponsored the "Crappie Contest" on Upper Red Lake for the past two years and look forward to the Third Annual on March 2, 2002.

The DNR, also concerned with the Walleye monitorium, met with the members of the URLAA. The DNR suspected a fairly substantial crappie population in the Upper Red Lake. To aid the angler and protect the population of crappies, the structure less lake needed some help. That is when the "Crib Project" was implemented. The DNR would issue the permit, but the funding was up to URLAA to ask for sponsors of the cribs and volunteers to build them and place them in the lake.

This is the success of the Crappie Crib Project with funding from the Red Lake Game Fund and the sponsors. The first (50) fifty cribs were built and placed by members of the URLAA and NBSC. In the spring of 2001, the Kelliher High School Building Trades Class built (32) thirty-two of the last forty cribs and put them in the lake before the ice went out. There were also friends who only "enjoy the fishing" up here who pitched in.

A Hearty Thanks to all who worked hard and
financially supported the project.

As you enjoy your fishing experience on Upper Red Lake, please support the sponsors who have made this all possible. If we forget anyone it was not intentional. A combined effort made this a reality and everyone deserves recognition.

Thank You, Enjoy Fishing and Remember Your Support is Appreciated.
